There’s a lot going on in the world of K-drama right now. But a few dramas have been tapping into a generation of young, talented actors and writers. And though they may be new to the scene, they are quickly making themselves known with two perfect examples of dramas that will be airing this year - Hot Young Bloods 2014 and Who Are You: School 2015. Hot Young Bloods 2014 is the sister drama to One Warm Word 2013, starring ZE:A’s Im Siwan as Cha Woo-young and Girl's Day member Yura as his first love Seo Bo-young. It’s told in two parts (one consisting of six episodes, the other half of four) and is simple yet gripping. It doesn’t have any fancy elements that will win over the audience, but the drama is able to stand on its own. It manages to show a very realistic view of adolescence - all the while being entertaining. Who Are You: School 2015 stars Yoon Shi Yoon as Park Joon-ho, a young man who skipped out on high school to work in his father’s food delivery business. After failing to get his employment reinstated, he returns to school for one year before returning home to South Korea. There, he finds himself returning to his past experiences where he finds the school bully is now the new principal. And so begins his story of obsession, redemption, and revenge. Seo Bo-young definitely has the talent to be the protagonist of a drama. She’s incredibly strong - both physically and mentally - and can hold her own against anyone at all times. But what stands out more than anything else is that she isn’t that skilled an actress yet - which is one reason why her character isn’t that memorable in Hot Young Bloods 2014. Still, it’s hard not to root for this young star with only her first role in a drama under her belt. Hot Young Bloods 2014 depicts a very realistic view of adolescence - portraying a lot of what happens when a teenager goes through a transitional phase where they have nothing but themselves and their peers for company. It’s like the oldest cliché in the book, but it’s still very relatable. Who Are You: School 2015 is an interesting drama. While it does take on some artistic elements (i.e. the idea of “Hollywood magic,” themes of bullying), I was surprised at how realistic it is in how things unfold in real life. It’s something that resonates in today's world - when society is becoming more and more fond of unreal concepts than real ones - and that makes Who Are You: School 2015 one to watch out for in 2015.
